My Experience as an Intern in Australia

After finishing school in Germany I wanted to go to an English-speaking country, so I decided to go to Australia. It has been a dream of mine since I was young, but the best part about going is, I’m able to improve my English as well as experience a new culture. I chose Australia because I heard it’s nice with friendly people – plus I have family here which eased my nerves.

The first time I heard of Headland and Klugo was when the agency that helped organise my internship said that I would have a skype Interview with the Marketing Manager. I researched the companies before the Interview and I thought that they would be a good place for me to conduct my internship. I thought it would be good for me to be an Intern in a medium sized company because it provided me with the best opportunity to improve my English.

My exciting trip to Australia started in January. Before I came to Klugo and Headland I was in a English language school. Melbourne is a very big city but I got used to it very quickly because all the people here were very friendly and helpful. In the city I saw a lot of things, but the best part was when I had BBQ’s along the Yarra River with my school mates.

The start of my internship was great because luckily I wasn’t the only Intern in the company. The good thing about it was, I had someone who I could talk to about the work. I instantly felt like I was a member of the team and began to relax.
The best days of the week are Fridays because we all finish early and sit together and talk about the week and our plans for the weekend.

I helped the Marketing department by entering data into the software as well as writing weekly updates and Blog posts. At the beginning, it was a little bit difficult for me to write Blogs but after a while it got easier. It was difficult for me because I’ve never had to write a blog back home in Germany and now I had to write Blogs in English. After a while, it began to get easier because I was used to writing in this style.

Whilst here, I learnt to use Google AdWords and how to research good Keywords for the Websites. Keywords are important for SEO which I found interesting. I am very happy that I had the opportunity to work in the Marketing Team.

I wanted to intern in Australia because it looks good on the resume to have experience abroad. Experiences abroad is good because companies see that you’ve taken the opportunity to get experience in a different country, which will allow you to extend your horizons. Plus, someone with more experience is more likely to get the job.

Whilst in Australia, I saw many things. I was so excited that I was able to visit my first Australian Open, then for my Birthday I got tickets for the Formula 1. The most exciting part about the F1 was, the opportunity to go on the track after the race. I also went to the Cricket World Cup and watched the world cup opening game between Australia and England. I also had the chance to watch a Football match live which was very exciting for me.

My Internship is nearly over and I’m looking forward to going to Sydney and Cairns. After that I’ll be on my way home to Germany. I think I will miss a few things in Melbourne, and I have certainly made new friends on the other side of the world. They are all from different countries.
